PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – A woman is dead after she was struck by a driver in the Point Breeze neighborhood of Pittsburgh.

According to Pittsburgh Public Safety, first responders were dispatched to the intersection of South Dallas Street and Reynolds Street around 9 a.m. for a reported accident involving a pedestrian.

Once there, police said they found a woman who was unconscious and not breathing. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation was performed until doctors were able to rush her to hospital, where she was pronounced dead. The Allegheny County Coroner's Office identified the victim as 51-year-old Vira Petrakh.

Police said the driver of the vehicle remained at the scene and cooperated with police.

“I am very upset. This is my neighborhood and I use this intersection all the time and I'm very worried because people don't stop at red lights,” said Point Breeze neighbor Karen Engro.

Traffic was diverted for several hours while police investigated the busy area.

“There are definitely a lot of people coming and going. A lot of runners come through here. So definitely a lot of pedestrians,” said neighbor Marc Amigone.

Police aren't saying whether anyone is responsible, but many people in the area say drivers are speeding and running red lights.

“I wish it had surprised me, but I'm not. I've had this thought so many times. 'Someone gets killed, someone gets killed,' and here we are,” Engro said.

The Pittsburgh Police Collision Investigation Unit is investigating.
