Should you hide Julius Chestnut when Tony Pollard and Tyjae Spears are injured?

The Titans backfield is a mess due to injuries to Tony Pollard and Tyjae Spears. Should you consider picking up Julius Chestnut?

UPDATE – November 1, 4:17 p.m.: Tony Pollard is officially listed as questionable after not training all week, while substitute Tyjae Spears has been ruled out despite returning to training on Wednesday.

While there's still a chance Pollard can keep up, it's looking more and more like the Titans will rely on Julius Chestnut this weekend against the Patriots. Chestnut only saw 18.4% of the snaps in the blowout loss to the Lions in Week 8, and most of that came in what would be considered garbage time. Still, the 24-year-old racked up seven runs and turned that workload into 32 rushing yards.

New England has actually been pretty bad at defending the run this season, as the team has given up the third-most fantasy points per game to opposing RBs. The Patriots are also giving up 133.1 opposing rushing yards per game through eight weeks.

Chestnut has no track record and the Titans' implied total is microscopically small. However, if he truly is the last man standing, you need to take a look at the entire season and DFS. – Garion Thorne

Oh, the Tennessee Titans. They provided top-notch entertainment for the season (thanks, Will Levi's memes), but not much fantasy production. At the moment, Tony Pollard ($6,800) is the 26th ranked running back in fantasy football over the last three weeks, averaging 13.67 DraftKings FPTS, 17.6 carries and 82.6 rushing yards. Pollard is battling a foot injury and did not practice on Wednesday and Thursday, making his availability for Sunday's game against the Patriots concerning.

If he is excluded, Tyjae Spears ($4,700) would be the next guy in line to get work in the backfield. Is Spears a good handcuff to restore value in Week 9?

Let's start this conversation with the facts: Spears is also dealing with an injury. He was unable to train on Thursday due to a hamstring injury, so Friday's training will be a deciding factor in whether he is fit for Week 9 or not. That being said, Spears' second year in Tennessee is no surprise. The Tulane alum is averaging just 7.4 FPTS per game and has just 33 carries for 114 rush yards this season. In reality, the Titans offense couldn't do much, if anything, on the floor when Pollard wasn't on the field. With Pollard in the backfield, Tennessee is averaging 4.7 yards per carry, compared to just 3.8 Y/C without Pollard — and zero touchdowns.

As for the matchup, the Patriots' defense against the run is very middle of the pack, allowing 4.5 Y/C to backs, but has allowed the fifth-highest EPA per dropback (0.1) to quarterbacks this season – if Spears does that is Will earn fantasy points, could be from the checkdown. Spears did post 54 receiving yards in Week 3 against the Packers, but hasn't even come close to that mark since. In a worrisome offense, Spears could potentially be a FLEX in a deep league, but otherwise it's a sit-in for me.
