Both sides of the 110 Freeway in South Los Angeles are closed after a fatal tanker truck crash

SOUTH LOS ANGELES (CNS) – One person was killed and two others injured when a tanker truck rolled over on the Northbound Harbor (110) Freeway at Manchester Boulevard, spilling 500 to 1,000 gallons of jet fuel onto the roadway, the Los Angeles Fire Department said Sunday.

The accident was reported at 10:55 p.m. Saturday and emergency responders found a dead person under the tanker truck, LAFD spokeswoman Margaret Stewart said.

The tanker truck driver was reportedly taken to the hospital in a private vehicle and had no contact with LAFD responders, she added. A 30-year-old woman was transported to hospital by paramedics with minor injuries.

Firefighters used a redwood plug to stop a leak in the tanker, which was carrying an estimated 8,000 gallons of jet fuel, Stewart said.

LAFD crews assisted CalTrans in applying an absorbent to control and mitigate the fuel spill, authorities said.

Once that process is complete, the owner of the tanker truck will take care of unloading the fuel, Stewart said, while the LAFD provides safety oversight. Firefighters will also assist the LA County Medical Examiner in extricating the victim from the vehicle, which may require righting the truck, she added.

The California Highway Patrol has issued a SigAlert for the northbound 110 in Manchester indefinitely, advising motorists to seek alternative routes for the northbound and southbound lanes between Slauson and Rosecrans avenues while cleanup efforts continue.
