Enough drugs were seized in the fentanyl bust to kill a quarter of California's population: police

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – A recent routine traffic stop along Interstate 5 in Northern California resulted in a massive fentanyl bust.

According to the California Highway Patrol, officers stopped someone for a traffic violation near Airport Boulevard in late October.

While the stop began routinely, officials say things quickly escalated when a Sacramento County Sheriff's Office officer spied possible narcotics in the car.

Two travel bags and a shopping bag full of counterfeit M30 pills were subsequently found, officials say; More than 66 pounds, or around 330,000 tablets, were seized.

Officers arrested the driver and took the Washington state resident to the Yolo County Jail.

CHP determined that the amount of pills seized in this one arrest, of which just a few milligrams of fentanyl are lethal, was enough to kill about a quarter of California's population.
