Jury selection begins for the suspect accused of killing an Alamogordo police officer

Dominic De La O is accused of shooting police officer Anthony Ferguson during a traffic stop last year.

ALAMOGORDO, N.M. – The man accused of killing an Alamogordo police officer last year is scheduled to stand trial beginning Monday for jury selection.

Dominic De La O faces multiple charges, including first-degree murder, for allegedly shooting and killing Alamogordo police officer Anthony Ferguson during a traffic stop. At the time of the shooting, investigators said De La O was charged in two other criminal cases.

In January 2022, De La O drove drunk and fled from law enforcement. He was arrested and released on conditions. However, he violated these conditions while the case is still pending.

De La O opened a new case in January 2023. Officers were trying to get a warrant for his arrest when a shootout ensued during a chase.

Documents show De La O pointed a gun at Alamogordo police officers. He was shot.

Afterwards, his conditions were briefly revoked. In June, his lawyer told a judge that the detention center was not providing him with adequate medical care.

Twelfth Judicial District Judge Angie Schneider agreed to “give him another chance.”

He was released just a month before he allegedly shot and killed Alamogordo officer Anthony Ferguson.

De La O also faces firearms charges in the case, with a trial scheduled for next year.

Recently, a federal judge convicted 31-year-old Jonah Apodaca of supplying a sawed-off shotgun that authorities say De La O used to kill Ferguson.
