According to police, three family members were killed in a fiery crash on I-96

INGHAM COUNTY, MI – Three of the four people killed in a fiery crash on I-96 in Ingham County Saturday night were family members who were traveling in the same vehicle, police said.

According to Michigan State Police, the accident, in which a tractor-trailer and trailer failed to stop to block traffic, claimed four lives. Another 17 people, including the semi-truck driver, suffered serious injuries and were transported to local hospitals by ambulance.

MSP has not released the names of those who died, but identified them by age and place of residence in a Post on X Sunday evening.

Three of the deceased were relatives from Lansing who were traveling together in a Chevy Trax: a 20-year-old woman, a 43-year-old woman and a 47-year-old man, police said. A 29-year-old Carson City man driving a Ford F-150 pickup also died.

Shortly before the crash, DTE Energy was working to move power lines across the highway near the M-52 overpass. State troopers assisted with a brief highway closure so workers could move lines across the roadway. The highway had just reopened and traffic was still backed up at the time of the accident.

The tractor-trailer was in the left westbound lane of I-96 when it encountered stationary traffic.

“It appears that the driver of the semi-truck did not see the backup and was unable to stop his vehicle in time,” MSP said on X.

More than a dozen vehicles were involved in the violent accident.

I-96 westbound at M-52 and the M-52 overpass were closed Sunday. The highway was reopened to traffic on Monday. The overpass will remain closed until it is inspected and deemed safe for vehicles.

“As you drive to work today, remember to slow down and be aware of what's in front of you,” MSP said Monday morning on X. “Take time to stop when traffic in front of you slows down becomes. Buckle up!! I wish you a wonderful day.”

MSP was assisted at the scene by the Ingham County Sheriff's Office, Northeast Ingham Emergency Service Authority, Meridian Township Fire, Stockbridge Area Emergency Services Authority, Dansville Fire and Delhi Fire.
