Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki on Flores island erupted at 11:57 p.m. (1557 GMT) on Sunday, spewing a fiery red column of lava, volcanic ash and glowing rocks, according to information and images from the Indonesian Volcanology Agency.

A joint team of police, military and search and rescue personnel was deployed to the area to evacuate residents from the nearest villages. Authorities are still collecting data on the number of evacuees.

The agency raised the volcano's alert level to the highest level and said a four-mile (seven-kilometer) radius around the crater needed to be cleared. It warned of possible flash floods and cold lava flows in the coming days.
