Callie Pounders, an all-state softball pitcher from Corinth, dies in a car accident

Callie Pounders, a senior at Corinth High School, died in a vehicle accident Monday morning, according to the Corinth School District.

The accident occurred on County Road 408, Alcorn County Sheriff Ben Caldwell said, according to WTVA. Pounders left the road, attempted to overcorrect her vehicle and struck a tree. She died at Magnolia Regional Health Center in Corinth.

Pounders was 17.

“It is with great sadness that I inform you that one of our students, Callie Pounders, died in a car accident this morning,” Corinth Principal John Barnett said in a social media post. “We are heartbroken by this loss and mourn with the student’s family and friends.”

“In times like these, we must continue to come together and support each other as a community of Corinth. During this time, we respect the family's privacy and time to grieve. If there is anything we can do to help the family as a community, we will share that information with you. We are deeply saddened by this loss and will do our best to continue to care for each other.”

The senior pitcher helped lead Corinth to the MHSAA Class 5A state title with a 2-0 win over East Central, the first in school history. Pounders pitched all 14 innings in the championship series, allowing four earned runs and 20 strikeouts.

Pounders had a 1.29 earned run average with 229 strikeouts during the 2023-24 season and was named to the Clarion Ledger All-State second team as a pitcher. She also competed on Corinth's volleyball and powerlifting teams.
