Eastern Washington Eagles betting preview

The Eagles posted an overall record of 21-11 a season ago and captured the Big Sky regular-season championship with a conference record of 15-3. However, Eastern Washington lost to Sacramento State in the first game of the conference tournament.

The Eagles will begin a new chapter this year with new head coach Dan Monson. He'll have a lot of work ahead of him with all five starters from last year's team departing, as well as their top six scorers. Sophomore Sebastian Hartmann (3.0 PPG) has the most experience of the returnees.

Colorado Buffaloes betting preview

On the Colorado side, they did pretty well overall last year in a tough Pac-12, going 26-11 and a conference record of 13-7. That put the Buffaloes behind Arizona and Washington State and ultimately lost to Marquette in the second round of the national tournament.

The Buffaloes will retain head coach Tad Boyle for his 15th year through the 2024-25 season. However, he will lose all five of last year's starters, most notably Tristan da Silva, KJ Simpson and Cody Williams. Guard J'Vonne Hadley (11.6 PPG) and center Eddie Lampkin (10.6 PPG) are also gone.

Why the Colorado Buffaloes will win

  • Colorado has won each of its last 16 games at the CU Events Center against opponents not ranked in the AP.
  • Eastern Washington has lost the first half in each of its last three road games against the Big 12 Conference.

Why the Eastern Washington Eagles will win

  • Eastern Washington has won seven of its last eight games against opponents not ranked in the AP rankings.

Matchup/League Facts

  • Colorado ranked 7th among Division 1 teams in field goal percentage (49.5%) last season.
  • Colorado ranked 9th among Division 1 teams in opponent rebounds per game last season (30.3).
  • Eastern Washington ranked 4th among Division 1 teams in field goal percentage (50.1%) last season.
  • Eastern Washington ranked 13th among Division 1 teams in assists per game (17.6) last season.

Eastern Washington vs. Colorado prediction

I'll stick with Colorado. The Buffaloes were hit pretty hard by the transfer portal in the offseason, but there is still plenty of retained talent on the roster. Colorado brings in Andrej Jakimovski (9.7 PPG) from Washington State, and Division II adds Trevor Baskin and Elijah Malone. There will be a regression this year, but it may not be as severe as one thinks.

As for Eastern Washington, they are in the early stages of a rebuild this season as Monson gets his proverbial feet wet. New transfers like Angelo Winkel and Elijah Thomas will have the opportunity to contribute right from the start, but there will likely be some growing pains along the way.
