It happened around 9:30 p.m. when Houston police said they were called to a single-vehicle accident and emergency responders had to free two patients trapped in the car.

Based on preliminary evidence, Sgt. R. Dallas of the HPD Vehicle Crimes Unit said it appears the unidentified man (the driver) lost control of his car and crashed into a light pole.

Emergency officials said the driver died of his injuries at the hospital, while the passenger was in stable condition at last check-up at a trauma center.

Sergeant. Dallas also said the roads were wet at the time of the crash, but it is unclear whether alcohol or speed may also have played a role.

Additionally, the sergeant believes the people involved in the accident may have been from out of town.

“Maybe they were from out of state, so maybe they weren't familiar with the area and didn't realize it was just a turning lane that they were in and tried to swerve and lost control of the vehicle,” explained she.

Due to the accident, the southbound and Bellaire westbound feeder lanes were closed, but have since reopened.
