A Chicago police officer was shot and killed while on duty in Chatham

A Chicago police officer was fatally shot in the Chatham neighborhood Monday night, and another person was later found dead at the scene, sources said.

According to police radio traffic, the shooting was reported during a 911 call just after 8 p.m. in the 8000 block of South Ingleside Avenue.

As the chaos unfolded and a dispatcher tried to determine the location of the officer who was shot, microphones rang as officers screamed into their radios.

“We need an ambulance, we need an ambulance now!” an officer shouted over the radio.

The wounded officer was taken by other officers to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead, according to law enforcement and radio traffic. A short time later, another person was found dead at the scene.

Two people fled the area in a damaged Ford Explorer after the shooting, officials reported over the radio. The passenger was armed with an automatic weapon.

There was a large police presence outside the Hyde Park medical center late Monday evening. Police officers in and out of uniform could be seen hugging each other while others could be heard screaming.
