Lineups Liverpool vs. Bayer Leverkusen in the live stream: Where to watch the UEFA Champions League online, TV channels

Liverpool meets Bayer Leverkusen UEFA Champions League on Tuesday with Xabi Alonso returning to Anfield with his defending Bundesliga kings. The Spanish tactician spent five years as a player on Merseyside, which included the heroic UCL triumph in 2005. Alonso's German side can overtake their hosts with an unexpected away win considering they have taken seven points from a possible nine so far in the league phase, with the Reds sitting at the top alongside Aston Villa on nine points.

Liverpool fans were eager to see Alonso named as Jürgen Klopp's successor earlier this year when the German announced his decision to step down, but the former Real Madrid and Bayern Munich star rejected his three ex-employers to stay with Leverkusen this season. The EPL leaders ultimately chose Arne Slot, who is making a strong start to life at Anfield, and the Dutch tactician has now won five straight home wins and four consecutive UCL wins for the second time since his stint in the 2021/22 season. Opening victories achieved.

Leverkusen have been Germany's invincibles since last season, but repeating that trick was always going to be extremely difficult. The treble eluded the Werkself in the end and they are currently in a difficult series of draws, which they could win with three draws in their last four games, leaving them seven points behind Bayern. This will be the first meeting between Liverpool and Leverkusen since 2004/05, the year in which the Reds achieved the goal in spectacular fashion despite Alonso missing both games with the Germans injured.

How to watch and ratings

  • Regard: Paramount+
  • Opportunities: Liverpool -138; Draw +320; Leverkusen +340

Previous league phase

Liverpool have so far beaten Milan, Bologna and RB Leipzig and are joint leaders in the Champions League alongside Villa. Slot's men also lead the Premier League after both Arsenal and Manchester City lost ground at the weekend. The Reds have now won 10 of their last 11 games under the Dutchman and will be a major challenge for Alonso's side. Leverkusen have seven points from nine after wins against Milan and Feyenoord, although Stade Brestois 29 in France denied them full points. This draw against the Ligue 1 club is symptomatic of their season in the Bundesliga so far, in which they have been able to hold on to a point more often than they would have liked. The Werkself are unbeaten away from home this season and hope it stays that way.

Team news

Liverpool: Ibrahima Konate was injured in the win over Brighton and Hove Albion but should be fit to be in the squad here. Joe Gomez stepped in and could do the same here, while Alisson, Harvey Elliott, Federico Chiesa and Diogo Jota remain absent. Mo Salah could become the first player in over 20 years to score in six consecutive UCL home games for an English club, after Ruud van Nistelrooy scored with Manchester United in 2003.

Possible Liverpool XI: Kelleher; Alexander-Arnold, Gomez, Van Dijk, Robertson; Mac Allister, Gravenberch; Salah, Jones, Diaz; Nunez.

Leverkusen: Nordi Mukiele picked up an injury against Stuttgart and is not expected back before the international break as Amine Adli and Jeanuel Belocian are also missing. Martin Terrier was missing from Friday's Bundesliga game but Alonso should have him back. With Terrier back, Jeremie Frimpong Mukiele can cover on the right, while Florian Wirtz looks to follow Erling Haaland and Manor Solomon as players aged 21 or younger to score in their first three Champions League away games.

Possible Leverkusen XI: Hradecky; Tapsoba, Tah, Hincapie; Frimpong, Xhaka, Garcia, Grimaldo; Terrier, Wirtz; Boniface.

forecast

This game will be close and a draw wouldn't be a big surprise, but Liverpool are ahead form-wise, which means Leverkusen can consider a point at Anfield as one point won rather than two points lost. A one-goal victory margin for the Eds sounds about right, with Salah and Wirtz undoubtedly involved in the proceedings. Choose: Liverpool 2, Leverkusen 1.
