1921 Race Massacre Survivor Makes His Vote for Kamala Harris Public

One of the last known living survivors of an infamous racist attack is running for Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris.

Lessie Benningfield Randle, 109, issued a statement late Friday saying she was grateful for the right to vote. Randle was born in 1914 and women in Oklahoma did not gain the right to vote until 1918.

In 1921, Randle witnessed the destruction of Tulsa's Greenwood neighborhood by a white mob. The area was known for its relatively wealthy black residents. Researchers say up to 300 people died.

In her statement, Randle alluded to Harris' Republican opponent, former President Donald Trump, but did not mention his name.

“As voters, we must protect our children from politicians who believe that retaliation and violence are virtues. Because I lived through this nightmare. And believe me, we cannot afford to go back,” Randle wrote.

Recently, Harris attacked Trump for saying that former Wyoming Rep. Liz Cheney (right), a Harris supporter, should “shoot her” with guns. Trump said he was trying to make the point that Cheney would be less likely to support wars if she had to fight in them herself.

Here is Randle's full statement:

“I don't know how long I have left. But if this is my last vote, I'm grateful it's for Kamala Harris. I have five children and more than 20 grandchildren. Vice President Harris has a better chance of building the nation they are destined to inherit.”

“My grandchildren deserve a world where caring for their parents is not a financial burden, medicine is affordable and women are free. And all of our children deserve a president who inspires them to learn from history, not a tyrant who seeks to erase them.”

“The mob that murdered my neighbors in Greenwood was so angry, and this country is in danger of allowing that same anger to take over its soul again. But voters can say no to a politician who encourages white people to turn against their darker-skinned neighbors. Voters can say no to giving full immunity to rogue cops to terrorize us. We can say no to candidates who take away students' freedom to learn about our country's past. As voters, we must protect our children from politicians who believe that retaliation and violence are virtues. Because I lived through this nightmare. And believe me, we can’t afford to go back.”
