A handful of Virginia incumbents are victorious as results are announced

A handful of winners have been declared in Virginia, while most races remain open Tuesday night as ballots continue to be counted.

At the top of the list, voters faced a choice between candidates from the two major parties: Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump. Virginia residents also elect members of Congress and leaders for local offices.

A first look at the results

Presidential

Polls largely suggest Harris has a significant lead in Virginia, although some Republicans argue the state could flip. In the crucial final days of the campaign, Trump made a stop near Roanoke to rally his supporters.

With about 46% of the votes counted, Trump has a narrow lead in Virginia with 49.6% of the votes counted and Harris trails with 48.7%.

US Senate

Incumbent Sen. Tim Kaine faces a challenge from a political newcomer, Republican Hung Cao. Kaine has served in the Senate since 2013. Cao received Trump's endorsement but is likely to face a narrow path to victory in a state that has not elected a Republican senator since 2002.

According to the Associated Press, Kaine is in the lead with 51.1% of votes counted as of 9 p.m., while Cao has 48.9%. Around 46% of the votes were counted.

US House of Representatives

Victories

All 11 of Virginia's seats in the House are up for vote, including three open seats for the U.S. House of Representatives. Seven of these races have not yet been announced, including a small number that are considered competitive.

Four incumbents won victories.

Democratic Rep. Donald Beyer has won re-election to the U.S. House of Representatives in District 8, which includes parts of Arlington and Alexandria, the Associated Press said.

“I love my job and it's the best opportunity I've ever had to be a change agent to try to improve people's lives,” Beyer told WTOP shortly after his re-election. “And I’m really honored to be able to do it again.”

Incumbent Democratic Rep. Robert Scott won re-election in District 3, which is in the Hampton Roads region.

Republican Rep. Ben. Cline won re-election in District 6, which includes areas in the Shenandoah Valley, the Associated Press said.

In southwest Virginia, incumbent Republican Rep. Morgan Griffith won District 9.

The ballots are still being counted

Election forecasts suggest one of the most competitive congressional races in the country is Virginia's 7th District, where two Army veterans are running against each other – Republican Derrick Anderson and Democrat Eugene Vindman.

With about 71% of votes counted so far, Vindman is in the lead with 51% of votes counted and Anderson has 49% of votes counted, according to the Associated Press.

This district is located in Prince William County and extends south to Fredericksburg. In the past there have been repeated changes between Democratic and Republican control.

The seat was vacated by Rep. Abigail Spanberger, one of two Democratic incumbents resigning from their Northern Virginia seats.

Rep. Jennifer Wexton is also stepping down from her duties in neighboring District 10, which covers much of Loudoun County.

Approximately 83% of votes were counted in District 10; So far, Democratic Senator Suhas Subramanyam is ahead of Republican Mike Clancy, a lawyer and business executive. According to the Associated Press, Subramanyam has 53% of those votes, while Clancy has 47%.

Republicans hope to flip those seats in Northern Virginia to retain control of the U.S. House of Representatives – where the GOP has a slim 220-212 majority. Both District 10 and District 7 are considered competitive by the Virginia Public Access Project, a nonpartisan website.

Other Important Races and Measures in Virginia

During the vote, voters announced their choices for new mayors, council members and school board members. Virginia residents also voted to amend the state constitution to extend an existing property tax exemption to the families of veterans who died in the line of duty.

The measure passed with 93% of the vote, while 9.6% voted against it.

Voter turnout by locality

According to the Fairfax County elections office, about 72% of the county's registered voters voted. Nearly 30% of those voters showed up to cast their votes from 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday

Election Day turnout was similar among residents of neighboring Loudoun County, with 27% of registered voters casting ballots as of 4 p.m. Tuesday. According to the district's election office, overall voter turnout there was 62%.

In Arlington County, 45% of voters chose to vote early, while 26% voted on Election Day as of 5 p.m., according to the elections office.
