A young boy dies and four are injured in a multi-vehicle crash on I-29 in Platte County

A multi-vehicle crash on southbound Interstate 29 at the 24.2 mile mark in Platte County, Missouri, resulted in one fatality and multiple injuries on October 23, 2024. The accident occurred at 3:00 p.m. when a 2019 Peterbilt tractor-trailer began to spin, resulting in a series of collisions with three other vehicles.

The first impact involved a 2002 Toyota Corolla that struck the rear of a 2022 Freightliner tractor-trailer before leaving the road and entering a tree line. The Peterbilt then collided with the rear of the Freightliner, causing the Freightliner to crash into a 2022 Ford F350.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported one fatality and several injuries from the accident. The injured include:

  • Juvenile Male 0, Sedalia, Missouri – Fatal, transported to the Jackson County Coroner’s Office
  • Terri L. Swartz, female, 44, St. Joseph, Missouri – Minor injuries, transported to North Kansas City Hospital by Platte County EMS
  • Joseph D. Waxmonski, male, 47, Linwood, Kansas – Minor injuries, will seek self-treatment
  • Samani B. Mahjouri, male, 57, Lincoln, Nebraska – Minor injuries, will seek self-treatment
  • Patsy A. Withrow, female, 78, Savannah, Missouri – Serious injuries, transported to North Kansas City Hospital by Platte County EMS

The crash is the 65th fatal crash and the 73rd fatality in the Troop A region in 2024. The Missouri State Highway Patrol was assisted at the scene by multiple units.
