5 dead when plane crashes through airport fence on takeoff and hits car

MESA, Ariz. (KPHO/Gray News) – Arizona authorities say an investigation is underway into the cause of a plane crash that killed several people near a Mesa-area airport Tuesday afternoon.

According to the National Transportation Safety Board, a Honda HA-420 jet attempted to abort takeoff before crashing through an airport fence and colliding with a vehicle.

The accident occurred around 4:45 p.m. near Greenfield and McKellips roads, southwest of Falcon Field Airport.

Aerial photos of the accident scene showed heavy smoke at the point where the plane and vehicle collided.

There were five people on board the plane, four of whom died at the scene of the accident. They have been identified as:

  • Spencer Lindahl, 43 years old
  • Rustin Randall, 48 years old
  • Drew Kimball, 44 years old
  • Graham Kimball, 12 years old

Sources confirmed that Randall was the pilot of the group that flew to Provo, Utah.

According to Mesa police, one person on the plane survived and was taken to the hospital with burn injuries.

The driver of the vehicle also died in the fiery accident but has not yet been identified as notification of next of kin was still in progress.
