Travis Kelce says brother Jason 'defended' their family in phone smashing incident.

Travis Kelce said his brother, Jason Kelce, defended his family when he responded to a fan's heckling by slamming his phone to the ground on Saturday. The brothers discussed the incident, which led to an investigation by Penn State Police and resulted in Jason exchanging a homophobic slur with the fan, on an episode of their “New Heights Podcast” released Wednesday.

“I know it’s bothering you, brother. …Everyone shares the videos that are out there. “This is going to make this a bigger situation than I think it really is,” Travis said on the podcast.

“But the real situation is that some clown came up to you and talked about your family and you responded in a way that defended your family. And maybe you used some words you regret. And that’s a situation that you just have to learn from and embrace.”

Jason, a former Philadelphia Eagles center, was in State College to perform at “College GameDay,” which was in town Saturday for the Penn State-Ohio State game. While standing outside Beaver Stadium, a fan can be heard on video walking behind Jason and making a homophobic slur about Taylor Swift and Travis' relationship. The fan said, “Kelce, how does it feel that your brother is a fan because he's dating Taylor Swift?”

Jason then turned around and appeared to take the phone of the fan who said the insult and throw it on the ground. The fan demanded that Jason give him the phone back, and Jason replied, “Who's the father now?”

Jason Kelce previously addressed the incident on ESPN's “Monday Night Countdown,” saying he was “not proud of it.” On the podcast, he expressed further regret, saying he was “not happy about the situation.”

“My reaction gave him insight and also made the situation more known,” Jason said. “That’s what I regret. It doesn't deserve any attention. It's really stupid. And if I just move on, it's a nothing burger. Nobody sees it. Now it's out there and it's only fueling more hate.

“The thing I regret most is saying that word, to be honest. The word used (the fan) is just ridiculous and takes it to another level. … It’s dehumanizing and it got under my skin.”

Travis praised his brother for “acknowledging” the situation and told Jason that “talking about it shows how sincere you are to a lot of people in this world.”

“Especially what you said Monday night, that you don’t vote for… hate. That’s just not who you are,” Travis said.

A spokesman for Penn State University Police and Public Safety confirmed Tuesday that the department is investigating the incident and the case review process is ongoing.
