Harris calls on his supporters to “never give up the fight for our democracy” in exchange for a concession.

Laura Barron Lopez:

Many of them have thought about it.

But first, Amna, I want to note that President Biden spoke with Vice President Harris today and congratulated her on her candidacy and on her historic campaign.

And he also called President-elect Donald Trump and congratulated him. And Donald Trump's campaign said the president-elect planned to go to the White House to speak with Biden and ensure a peaceful transfer of power.

But there was some finger-pointing among Democrats today, Amna. Some lawmakers and sources I spoke with said they believe President Biden should never have sought re-election and that the issue may have been resolved if he had resigned sooner.

Few felt that Harris could have done anything differently, that she was struggling with the headwinds of her time in office. A black Democratic organizer I spoke to in Michigan said there was a lot of talk about protecting democracy, but when they finally went door-to-door to talk to voters in their communities in Detroit, democracy failed simply fell on deaf ears because people were worried about their existence.
