Body camera footage shows Sarpy County sheriff's deputies responding to the home where an Omaha teacher was found dead

PAPILLION, Neb. (WOWT) – Multiple shots could be heard on video footage from body-worn cameras as Sarpy County sheriff's deputies responded to the home where they later found an Omaha teacher dead.

Sarpy County Sheriff Jeff Davis reviewed the footage during a news conference Thursday morning – the second such update he has given since officers found Rebecca Geiger, 45, dead in the early morning hours of Monday, Oct. 28 found in their home in the Chalco Hills area.

Officers responded to the home following a report of a domestic violence incident. Authorities said Geiger's 19-year-old daughter called 911 and told operators that her father, 44-year-old Rory Geiger, had shot her mother – and that he had pointed a gun at her.

The response ended with a shooting at the home near South 143rd Street and Meadows Parkway. Officers then went into the home and found Rory Geiger dead.

The incident is expected to be presented to a grand jury soon.

Davis said Thursday that there is much more footage from body-worn cameras but that he wanted to release some of it to show what his deputies expected and to understand why they reacted the way they did.

6 News was first on the scene this morning. The couple's two daughters were in the home when the shooting began. David praised the deputies' actions that day and reiterated Thursday that their actions likely saved the lives of one or both daughters, as well as one of the neighbors.

The officers found several weapons in the house. Authorities had been to the home about an incident about a month earlier and were told not to return.

Investigators examined body cameras worn by officers as well as cameras inside and outside the home. Previously, it was unclear whether Rory Geiger's fatal wounds were self-inflicted or caused by a gunshot from a Sarpy County deputy.

Authorities said five officers involved in the shooting have been placed on leave. None of them were injured.

Rebecca Geiger was a special education teacher who had just started her 10th year at Westside High School.

“She was just a very kind teacher,” said Elizabeth Power of Westside Community Schools. “She was so good at making her students feel seen and deeply loved and truly feel like they belong here at Westside High School, which is so important to every student, especially her students.”
