Fentanyl Crisis: What Makes the Drug So Deadly

San Francisco police arrested three people and seized more than four pounds of fentanyl Tuesday night as part of an investigation into drug sales in the city's Tenderloin.

The department said Wednesday that it has been investigating a suspected drug trafficker for a month and has obtained a search warrant for the suspect, his vehicle and his home.

On Tuesday around 9:30 p.m., officers saw the suspect leaving Oakland for San Francisco. Officers stopped him in the 900 block of Market Street and served a search warrant for him.

During the search, police said they found suspected fentanyl and other items related to drug sales. The suspect, identified as 20-year-old Marvin Izaguirre Varela, was arrested and booked into the San Francisco County Jail on suspicion of possession of a controlled substance for sale, transportation of a controlled substance and maintaining a premises , where narcotics are manufactured and stored conspiracy.

Officers with the SFPD Narcotics Unit also served a search warrant at a home in the 1100 block of 16th Street in Oakland. Police said they found additional fentanyl, ammunition and cash, as well as items used in drug trafficking and drug manufacturing.

Two other suspects, 21-year-old Emilson Benega Ramos and 18-year-old Cesar Gutierrez Doblado, were arrested. The pair were booked into Santa Rita Prison in Dublin on suspicion of possession of controlled substances for sale, maintaining a premises where narcotics are manufactured and stored and conspiracy.

According to police, nearly 1,900 grams of fentanyl were seized as part of the investigation.
