There is none There's a dearth of Grateful Dead collaborations and merchandise on the market these days, but there's a long oddity Trip Release that caught our attention: this official Yerba Mate from Grateful Dead.

Yes, it seems the Dancing Bears have made their way to South America to enjoy a Deadhead-inspired take on the traditional herbal tea and energy drink. And the canned drink is now available online.

The Grateful Dead's Weird Tea beverage brand's “Weird Yerba” collaboration launched last year but quickly sold out in stores. Now the band's canned drink collaboration is back on Amazon, with flavors like Grateful Grapefruit and a Mystical Mint.

Amazon sells a 12-pack of each flavor for $29.99. Each can is 26 fl oz. or 473 ml. It is the size of a large can of beer and contains the traditionally brewed mate drink as well as natural flavors. While yerba mate often tastes earthy or bitter, these flavored versions are much more pleasant.

According to Weird Tea, often used as an energy drink, each can of Grateful Dead Yerba Mate contains 160 mg of caffeine. Weird Tea also states that its drink is certified USDA organic and contains no artificial colors or sweeteners (the brand uses organic cane sugar for flavor). Note: While yerba mate and kombucha are both tea-inspired drinks, mate is not a fermented drink and therefore contains more natural caffeine. It also doesn't have the spicy “vinegar” taste of kombucha because it is made from the leaves of kombucha ilex paraguariensis Plant that exudes a rather herbal taste.

This is an officially licensed Grateful Dead collaboration with original artwork on the cans inspired by classic Deadhead iconography (think lightning bolts and roses). Drink Weird says the collaboration combines the brand's “commitment to organic goodness and free-spirited weirdness with the musical heritage and cosmic vibrations of the Grateful Dead.”

“As kindred spirits floating through the ethereal atmosphere of our universe, this fusion seems inevitable,” the brand’s website says. “How could we NOT join forces and spread the ethos of getting weird and staying grateful?”
