According to court documents, the jury had four options: find Watson guilty of first-degree murder, second-degree murder or manslaughter – or find him not guilty.

Court documents show the trial lasted about nine days starting Oct. 23. The negotiations reportedly lasted a full day plus an additional hour, but the verdict was unanimous.

In September 2022, Hayes was found shot and wounded in the area of 52nd Street and Boyd Street in North Omaha. He later died in hospital.

In June 2023, Watson was arrested in connection with the shooting.

His case was transferred to Douglas County District Court for trial last August.
