Whoopi Goldberg's Sister Act 3 adapted after Maggie Smith's death

During an interview on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon,” Whoopi Goldberg spoke about her upcoming film “Sister Act 3” and how the team had to adjust their plans following the death of her co-star Maggie Smith.

“We have to make some adjustments because, as you know, we just lost Maggie Smith,” Goldberg said. “And that’s how we’re going to do it. We will do it. It’s a change.”

Goldberg and Smith worked together on the original film Sister Act in 1992 and again on the sequel Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit in 1993. The story follows Deloris Van Cartier (Goldberg), who ends up in a California monastery as part of a witness protection program. Smith plays the Mother Superior in the monastery. The original film grossed $231 million at the box office against a budget of $31 million. The second film featured rising stars like Lauryn Hill and Jennifer Love Hewitt.

In January 2023, during an appearance on the talk show “Loose Women,” Goldberg mentioned that she would take on “the role of Mother Superior” to Smith, saying they could shoot wherever was most comfortable for the two-time Oscar winner.

The “Harry Potter” and “Downton Abbey” star died on September 27th at the age of 89. Following the announcement, Goldberg shared a picture of the two on the set of the original film on Instagram. The caption of the post read: “Maggie Smith was a great woman and a brilliant actress. I still can't believe I was lucky enough to work with the “one of a kind.” My deepest condolences to the family…RIP.”
