Milwaukee man accused of killing uncle, second man weeks apart

A Milwaukee man previously accused of shooting a man in August is now accused of shooting and killing his own uncle weeks earlier.

Prosecutors have now charged 20-year-old Daeshaun Graves with murder, among other things, in two separate cases.

“Every time I look up my brother's case or call, it always says 'shooter unknown,'” Shada Graves told FOX6 News in August. “A few weeks later, my nephew shoots a man in the head and sets his body on fire.”

Daeshaun Graves was previously charged with murder on August 4th. This week he was charged in the July death of his own uncle, Darrell Harbor. Prosecutors said Graves shot Harbor near 36th and Courtland. The shooting was caught on nearby surveillance cameras.

Shada Graves, Harbor's sister, told FOX6 News in August that she went to the police: “I called them the very next day to tell them who the shooter was, which was my nephew.”

It is unclear where Daeshaun Graves was in the days following Harbor's murder. But weeks later, prosecutors said he pulled the trigger again — killing 31-year-old Quincy Smith near 84th Street and Carmen.

Prosecutors said Graves shot Smith after a fight. Smith fell back into a van that had been stolen hours earlier, and Graves drove away with Smith's head still hanging out of the vehicle. An hour later, police found the van set on fire near 34th and Auer streets. Smith's body was inside.

“This was torture, like what he did to my son,” Smith's mother said. “I never saw my baby when he left the world. That hurt me the most.”

Graves in custody

Two days after the August shooting, police officers showed up at a home that was being rented out as an Airbnb. They arrested Graves and his 22-year-old girlfriend, Jakiya Gates. She is accused of aiding and abetting a criminal and still doesn't have a lawyer to represent her.

FOX6 reached out to Graves' attorney but did not receive a response by deadline for this story. Court records show he is accused of:

  • Shooting on July 15th: First Degree Reckless Murder, Bail Violation (two counts)
  • Shooting on August 4th: First Degree Reckless Murder, Arson, Mutilation of a Corpse, Release on Bail (two counts)

Graves remains in jail on a combined $1 million bond for those two cases.
