'Drunk' Florida man shoots, kills dog because power goes out after Hurricane Milton: 'You're an idiot'

A dog is dead and his owner is behind bars, accused of killing him because he was angry about being without power after Hurricane Milton.

Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivey says John Burgos was sitting in his home around 4 a.m. on Oct. 12 and began firing his gun inside the home.

Deputies say he was angry because Hurricane Milton knocked out his power and FPL hadn't turned it on yet.

“This idiot fired his gun in his house and shot his dog,” Sheriff Ivey said. “If that wasn’t bad enough, he doesn’t call 911 right away. He goes to his neighbor’s house. He says he couldn't find his phone. No wonder, but alcohol was involved. He said he couldn't do that.” finds his phone, goes to his neighbor's 911 line and tells him he thinks he shot his dog. No, you knew you shot your dog.

Ivey went on to say that after Burgos called 911 from his neighbor's phone, he went home and sat on the porch without attempting to help his pet.

“This person is mad at FPL so he goes and shoots and kills his dog – makes perfect sense, right? Absolutely not. That was total sarcasm,” Ivey said. “This guy deserves to get what he’s going to get.”

Ivey said Burgos showed no remorse for killing the dog, named Flick.

According to the sheriff's office, Burgos only said, “FPL forced me to do this.”

“You're an idiot. That’s what made you do this,” Ivey said. “Don’t blame others for killing your dog. You had evil in your heart. You were crazy. You couldn’t control your emotions, got drunk and killed your dog.”

Burgos was charged with shooting and throwing a rocket into an apartment, using a firearm while under the influence of alcohol and cruelty to animals.
