Massage therapist accused of assaulting customer at NE Bend spa and faces new charges against two other women

Two incidents allegedly occurred just days after Jianming Tang was released on bail on an original charge

BEND, Ore. (KTVZ) – A man arrested last year on charges of sexually abusing a massage customer at a northeast Bend spa was arraigned Thursday on revised charges involving two other women at the same location – Incidents that allegedly occurred less than two weeks ago following his release on bail.

Jianming Tang, who turns 47 on Friday, appeared by telephone on Thursday for arraignment regarding the changed information. He now faces six Class A misdemeanor charges – three counts each of third-degree sexual abuse and practicing massage without a license.

As in previous sessions, a Mandarin interpreter helped Tang follow the proceedings before Deschutes County District Judge Randy Miller. Court records do not list the address of Tang, who worked at May Spa on Northeast Bellevue Drive at the time of the allegations. The original alleged victim took part in an undercover operation that led to Tang's arrest.

The first charges related to alleged sexual contact at May Spa in July 2023. The additional charges relate to two women and incidents of sexual contact that occurred on September 23 and 29 last year. That's less than two weeks after Tang signed a release agreement on Sept. 18 in which he agreed to post 10% of his $10,000 bail and meet several conditions, including no contact with the suspect Victim.

Tang's attorney, Jason Wheeless, said it was not yet clear to him why the new charges were filed on Oct. 30, more than a year after the alleged crimes. Assistant District Attorney Alison Filo tells us all charges will be addressed at a later hearing.

Because of the additional charges and the time needed to prepare, Wheeless told the judge he expects to file a motion to postpone Tang's four-day trial, already scheduled for Jan. 14 next year before a six-judge jury. A readiness hearing is scheduled for January 7.

Tang pleaded not guilty to the first two charges last May, and a plea date for the new charges has not yet been set. Since the defense's request to postpone the trial is still pending, Judge Miller has not postponed it for now.
