Wellesley Girl Scouts and Boston Food Bank team up for turkeys

BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) – State and city leaders joined members of the Greater Boston Food Bank Wednesday morning for the 19th Annual Meeting Chain of giving Event.

volunteers, including Wellesley's Ten Acre Boy Scout Troopformed a chain to unload 1,200 frozen turkeys from a truck.

The turkeys will be stored at the food bank until they are donated to those in need on Thanksgiving.

Boston Mayor Michelle Wu said the effort helps address a serious problem in our communities.

“The issue of food insecurity is a much larger group than anyone realizes,” Wu said. “People are working and doing their best and still need that little extra support at the current prices.”

One of the Girl Scouts said she enjoyed unloading turkeys with her friends and supporting a good cause.

“It was really fun and I really enjoyed it,” said Lais Caixtea. “And I really appreciate my troops for helping me.”

The GBFB presented the troop with the Nally Award for donating its Girl Scouts Cookie Fund to the organization.

The GBFB established the award in 2006 to recognize one or more young people who have worked to end hunger in their community.

“We felt really successful because we came to every meeting and it was really fun to see us win a prize,” Annika Wewers said.

After the truck was unloaded, the Boy Scout troop posed for a group photo Lieutenant Governor Kim Driscoll.
