2 dead after car crashes into tree on I-64 and catches fire

NEW KENT COUNTY, Va. (WWBT) – Two people were killed in a crash on Interstate 64 Friday morning.

Shortly before 11 a.m., Virginia State Police troopers were called to I-64 West at mile marker 205 for a reported accident.

According to VSP, a vehicle crashed into a tree and then caught fire.

After the accident, the tree fell across all lanes of I-64 west and part of it eastbound.

VSP confirms that two people died in the crash.

“Troopers are currently working to identify the victims and notify next of kin,” Virginia State Police said.

According to VDOT, the backups are over 8 miles long.

Traffic will be diverted from exit 211.
