Jockey accused of shocking horses at St. Landry Parish race track

OPELOUSAS, La. (KPLC) – A horse jockey is accused of shocking horses at the Evangeline Downs Racetrack and Casino (EVDRC) in Opelousas, according to the Louisiana State Police (LSP).

On November 7, State Police began investigating reports of misconduct at EVDRC by 29-year-old Martin Osuna of Arizona. Osuna was scheduled to take part in a race at the venue, LSP said.

According to investigators, Osuna falsified information on a racing document. State police issued an arrest warrant for him.

When Osuna arrived, he was arrested and searched by LSP. According to LSP, officers found five horse shock devices in his possession.

Osuna was arrested and booked into St. Landry Parish Prison on the following charges:

  • Filing False Public Documents
  • Falsifying information in a race document
  • Violation of Public Records
  • Violation of La. Revised Statutes 4:175 relating to unnatural stimulation of horses, five counts
