TV crime show-inspired murderer set to be convicted of brutally killing and dismembering a woman

When Cory Martin wanted to know how to cover up a gruesome crime and dispose of a murder victim's dismembered body, he turned to television and watched “The First 48” and “Dexter” for tips, federal prosecutors said.

“The defendant instructed Witness 1 to watch the television show “Dexter” with him to prepare for the murder. In “Dexter,” a serial killer murders and dismembers his victims by concealing forensic evidence by covering his “killing room” from floor to ceiling in plastic. ” said prosecutors.

On Thursday, Martin will be sentenced in federal court in Brooklyn for murdering sex worker Brandy Odom and then dismembering her body for disposal as part of a life insurance scam.

He faces a life sentence.

“It is appropriate that Martin should face a mandatory sentence of the rest of his life in prison for this terrible, cold-blooded crime, motivated by greed and committed after extensive planning,” U.S. Attorney Breon Peace said after Martin’s sentencing. “Martin viewed the victim as a moneymaker who trafficked her for commercial sex and then, after killing her with his bare hands, discarded her butchered body parts like trash so he could profit from her death.”

Odom's mother is expected to address the court before sentencing.

Authorities say Odom's dismembered body was found in a park in Canarsie in 2018. The 26-year-old's head and bare torso were found between leaves and branches. Her arms and legs were discovered nearby, officials said.

He was only arrested in November 2020.

Martin, 36, was convicted in March of murder-for-hire and conspiracy to commit murder-for-hire that resulted in Odom's death, as well as conspiracy to commit wire fraud, aggravated identity theft and fraudulent use of identification.

“While living with the defendant, Odom acted as her pimp and controlled every aspect of her life, using the proceeds from her commercial sex work to pay his bills and fund his lifestyle. “The defendant then planned to profit even more from Odom by taking out life insurance policies on her behalf and murdering her to collect the proceeds,” prosecutors said.

Police said Anderson read several articles about the killing in the months after the killing, including one with the headline “Search area expands after dismembered body found in Brooklyn's Canarsie Park.”

Adelle Anderson, 32, who was also arrested in the crime, previously pleaded guilty to murder-for-hire, identity theft and wire fraud. According to the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of New York, she has not yet been convicted.
