Here's a recent AP football story:

LIVERPOOL, England (AP) — Arne Slot vs. Xabi Alonso had the makings of an epic fight.

In the end, it was the Liverpool manager who got the win against the man many believed would take over at Anfield this season.

Thanks to a hat-trick from Luis Diaz and a goal from Cody Gakpo, Liverpool beat German champions Bayer Leverkusen 4-0 in the Champions League on Tuesday, endearing Slot even more to the Merseyside club's fans, who joyfully chanted his name at the end.

“People singing for a manager is not that common, at least not in Holland,” Slot said.

It all seems so easy for the Dutchman, who replaced Jürgen Klopp in the summer and has led Liverpool to the top of the Premier League and now the Champions League after a stellar start to his tenure.

This is the 14th win in his 16 games as manager, but with his rival in the dugout, this victory felt particularly symbolic.

Slot appears too level-headed to have bothered with the subplot against Alonso, arguably Europe's most sought-after young coach and someone seen as a leading candidate to succeed Klopp at Liverpool.

As the club's former Champions League winner, the stars seemed to align when Klopp made the surprise announcement in January that he would be stepping down at the end of last season. At this point, Alonso was well on his way to leading Leverkusen to an unbeaten domestic season and a German league and cup double.

Slot's name seemed far removed from entertainment.

Turn the clock further and Alonso, who has also been linked with another of his former clubs, Bayern Munich, ended talks of a move when he declared he would stay at Leverkusen.

Liverpool looked elsewhere, Slot was the man chosen to replace Klopp and things could hardly have gone better for him or the club.

The former Feyenoord coach easily manages to fill the void left by an Anfield icon and one of the most successful managers of his generation. It may still be early days, but Liverpool appear to be ready to challenge for the biggest titles from the start under their new coach.

Rather than feel the pressure to live up to the standards set by Klopp, who has won a slew of trophies including the Premier League and Champions League, Slot embraces it.

“We want to be where we are now, we want to compete for everything,” he said. “So you have to accept that there is pressure when you work or play here.”

Leverkusen may not be as strong as they were last season, having won just three of their last nine games in all competitions, but it was still an extremely impressive result for Slot's team.

It was Leverkusen's worst defeat in more than two years – since the 5-1 defeat against Eintracht Frankfurt in Alonso's third game as coach.

“It can happen that you come to Anfield and lose. Losing 4-0 is not nice. They are a top team and they punished us,” Alonso said.

There was the potential for a very different narrative that evening. One in which Alonso – whose name was also chanted by the home crowd – made a triumphant return and showed Liverpool what they would have had had he been the one to succeed Klopp.

And even in defeat, his reputation remains high after leading Leverkusen to their first German title and ending Bayern's 11-year reign as champions. Only a defeat against Atalanta in the Europa League final prevented him from winning the treble.

No wonder he is being tipped as the future manager of Europe's biggest clubs, including Real Madrid.

But Liverpool appear to be in good hands with Slot, whose rise has been somewhat underestimated.

Despite winning the Dutch championship with Feyenoord, he was not an obvious choice to follow in Klopp's footsteps.

He doesn't exude the same charisma as the German on the sidelines. He doesn't fire up the crowd or players with the kind of chest-thumping that Klopp was famous for.

Still, he has quietly gotten to work with impressive ease, and his team is talking on the field.

With a record of eight out of ten wins in the Premier League, Liverpool are at the top ahead of four-time defending champions Manchester City.

A 100 percent start to the Champions League now leaves the other top European clubs behind – including City and reigning champions Real Madrid.

“Things were going so well with the new coach that it wasn’t easy for him to follow in Jürgen Klopp’s footsteps,” said Diaz. “Hopefully we have something to show for it at the end of the season.”
