LAPD says street racing may be to blame for Rolls-Royce-Mercedes-Benz crash that left two people critical in Van Nuys

VAN NUYS, LOS ANGELES (CNS) – Two people were critically injured when their vehicle was struck by a Mercedes-Benz that may have been driving a Rolls-Royce in Van Nuys, authorities said Saturday.

The Mercedes-Benz GT63 and Rolls-Royce Cullinan were speeding west on Sherman Way around 9:50 p.m. Friday when the Mercedes collided with the right side of a Honda Civic that was traveling east and turning left into a parking lot Sherman Circle, Los Angeles police said.

The two occupants in the Honda suffered life-threatening injuries.

The Rolls turned left to avoid a collision with the Honda and crossed into the oncoming lane of traffic, where it collided with an eastbound Chevrolet Traverse before striking a curb. The driver in the Rolls got out of the car and fled in an unknown direction, police said.

The driver of the Mercedes complained of pain and was taken to hospital. He was later arrested on suspicion of reckless driving, police said.

The LAPD's Valley Traffic Division asked anyone with information about the crash to call (818) 644-8114 or (818) 644-8255 or (877) 527-3247 during after-hours or weekends. Tipsters can also call Crime Stoppers at 800-222-TIPS or use the website lacrimestoppers.org.
