Queen Elizabeth II wrote daily entries in her personal diary until her death.

According to royal writer Robert Hardman in his updated biography, Charles III: New King. New dish. The inside storyOn September 6, 2022, two days before her death, the Queen wrote in her personal diary: “Edward came to visit me.”

She wrote this note while stationed at her beloved Balmoral in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, where she planned to spend her final days until her death on September 8, 2022. The monarch was referring to her private secretary Sir Edward Youngwho helped her arrange the swearing-in of the former prime minister Liz Truss.

Truss, 49, was the shortest-serving prime minister in British history, resigning from the post in October 2022 after just a month in office. Queen Elizabeth appointed Truss from Balmoral in September, marking Her Late Majesty's last public engagement before her death aged 96.

“It turns out she was writing it at Balmoral two days before she died,” Hardman wrote in his biography, the magazine reports telegraph. “Your last entry was as practical as ever.”

Hardman wrote in his book: “It could have described another normal working day, beginning in the usual way – 'Edward came to me' – as she noted the arrangements made for the swearing-in by her private secretary, Sir Edward Young – the new minister in the Truss administration.”

Elizabeth became queen in 1952 at the age of 25 after her father's death. King Georgeand became the longest-reigning and longest-lived British monarch. From the beginning of her reign, the Queen kept a factual diary in which she recorded the day's events before retiring for the evening.

According to Hardman's biography King Charles III maintains his mother's tradition of daily journal entries by writing a practical account of the day's activities. “He no longer writes grand narrative diaries like he used to,” a senior courtier said of the king’s diary-keeping habits, adding that the monarch “writes down his memories and reflections on this day.”

Charles, 75, has not spoken much about his mother since her death, although he recently brought it up in a speech to the Scottish Parliament on September 29. “My late mother particularly valued the time she spent at Balmoral and she was there, in the most popular places where she wanted to spend her final days,” he said.

Earlier this year, the King broke with royal tradition by opening Balmoral Castle to the public for the first time in history. Tours were planned throughout the summer until early August.
