The Steelers impress the Commanders with Mike Williams' late TD catch

Mike Williams made sure his Steelers debut was a memorable one.

The veteran wideout came to Pittsburgh in a trade with the Jets earlier this week and made his first catch in the fourth quarter of Sunday's game at Washington. It was a 32-yard strike from quarterback Russell Wilson that gave the Steelers a 28-27 lead after trailing the entire second half.

There were over two minutes left to play at this point, and the Commanders' attempt to get back on top ended when tight end Zach Ertz was stopped short on a fourth-and-9 near midfield, making it 1-1. There were 18 minutes left to play before the end of the game. The Commanders still had all three timeouts at that point and used them to set up a fourth-and-1 at the Washington 49-yard line, but defensive tackle Johnny Newton was caught offside after the Steelers lined up to score trying to get a Commander's player to do just that.

Williams' touchdown was the third of the day for the Steelers and might not have been necessary without a big play by Commanders safety Quan Martin in the fourth quarter. Martin ripped the ball out of the hands of Steelers running back Jaylen Warren at the 1-yard line to force a turnover that allowed Washington to maintain its lead. However, they couldn't move the ball and the Steelers had a short field to exploit for their go-ahead score.

Wilson was 14 of 28 for 195 yards, with the other two touchdowns going to Pat Freiermuth and George Pickens, who finished with five catches for 91 yards. They had 140 yards on the ground but needed 43 carries to get there on a day where the offense had to fight its way to victory. They are now 7-2 and have a big home game next weekend against the Ravens.

The Commanders can be pleased with the performance of their defense for most of Sunday, but their offense was also off form for most of the afternoon. Jayden Daniels was 17 of 34 for 202 yards, but there weren't enough explosive plays and the absence of Brian Robinson in the backfield hurt them in the ground game.

Daniels and Co. won't have much time to lick their wounds. They play the Eagles in Philly on Thursday, a game that will weigh heavily on the NFC East race.
