A murder suspect from Tennessee was taken into custody in Colombia, authorities said

CHAPIN, SC (WIS) – Authorities announced Sunday that Tennessee murder suspect Nicholas Wayne Hamlett was taken into custody after he was located and identified at a Columbia hospital. Hamlett is in the temporary custody of the U.S. Marshall Service's Columbia Carolinas Regional Fugitive Task Force.

According to police, Hamlett was located after a hospital employee recognized the suspect and notified police. A responding officer also recognized Hamlett.

Hamlett's identity was then confirmed using a fingerprint scanner. Columbia police said arrangements were being made with Tennessee authorities for Hamlett's extradition to Monroe County.

WIS was first notified of the ongoing search after police alerted citizen Hamlett, who was seen in the Chapin area.

The search for Hamlett lasted in the Midlands from Halloween night until Sunday November 10th.
