Family mourns toddler killed in hit-and-run accident in Kinston

KINSTON, NC (WITN) – A community is mourning the tragic death of one of their loved ones.

A 2-year-old girl was killed in a hit-and-run accident at the Carver Courts apartment complex in Kinston on Friday.

Her father, Rashaun Wade, was arrested as a suspect in the accident.

Family member Zyquan Sutton said he was outside in a neighboring apartment when police showed up after the incident.

“It scared me of what was going on. It scared me and everything because I didn’t know what was going on at the time,” Sutton says.

Sutton says he can't imagine the magnitude of the loss, as he has a little girl of his own.

“I respect all of this because of the little girl who died. I love her more than anything. God have mercy on her soul,” Sutton said.

Detrel Foye says the family is heartbroken after hearing the news.

“We are all grieving at the moment and taking it hard,” says Foye. “We just all have to stick together, you know? We lost someone who was very close to us. My cousin lost her child. We're all just trying to grieve, take care of each other and be there for each other. Do the right thing, grieve well and try to stay positive and think positively. Maybe everything will be okay.”

Another victim, a 35-year-old man, is in good condition at ECU Health Medical Center.

Foye says he hopes everyone finds peace soon and finds a way to move forward.

The suspect, Rashaun Wade, has been charged with multiple crimes, including second-degree murder and two counts of hit-and-run.

Kinston police say if anyone has information about the accident to call the department.
