In June, before Walker's 15th birthday in September, Menzel shared some sweet moments from life with a teenage son in an episode PEOPLE in 10.

“He's great. “He's a teenager, but he still hugs me every now and then, so I'll take it,” she teased at the time.

“What surprises me is how capricious it is. One moment they want nothing to do with you and the next moment they really show you how much they need you,” she added. “You really have to be on your guard and be willing to get out of their way and yourself and not take things too personally. Know that they feel your love, but also need their space.”

Menzel also opened up to PEOPLE in 2021 about the transformative experience of parenthood.

“It was actually really liberating when I became a mother because everything was so focused on myself,” she said in August 2021. “And when you have these beautiful little people to worry about, you learn priorities and perspective.”

The actress shared a sweet moment with her son in an interview in 2021 Shine. As she turned 50 in 2021, Menzel felt insecure about this milestone, particularly how it affected her identity as a performer and actress.

Walker, who was 12 at the time, confirmed this.

“He says, 'Mom, don't look in the mirror and don't worry about how you look. You're beautiful,'” Menzel told the outlet.

Her relationship with her son inspired her to practice self-love, she said in the interview, to “walk the walk and talk the talk” and to set a positive example for her son.

Meanwhile, Menzel and Walker's sweet mother-son red cap appearance wasn't the only family-related event of the evening, as Chu missed the premiere to be with his wife as the couple gave birth to their fifth child. He later shared a video of the little girl on Instagram to celebrate her birth.
