One dead, another injured in a crash in rural Merrick County

MERRICK COUNTY, Neb. (KSNB) – A two-vehicle collision in Merrick County Wednesday morning left one person dead and another seriously injured, according to authorities.

Officers with the Merrick County Sheriff's Office responded to a crash on Highway 14 near U Road in a rural part of the county around 10:30 a.m.

A preliminary investigation revealed that the driver of an SUV traveling north on Highway 14 crossed the center line and collided with a southbound pickup truck.

The driver of the SUV, identified as 46-year-old Ryan Peery of Cass County, died at the scene. The sheriff's office said Peery was not wearing a seatbelt at the time.

The driver of the pickup was taken to Merrick Medical Center and later transported to an Omaha hospital with serious injuries. Authorities said the driver was wearing a seatbelt and airbags deployed in both vehicles.

The Nebraska State Patrol, Nance County Sheriff's Office, Clarks Fire & Rescue, Central City Ambulance and the Central City Fire Department assisted at the scene.
