POMPANO BEACH, FL. (WSVN) – A man accused of targeting a U.S. congressman from South Florida remains behind bars after his arrest.

Margate police arrested 41-year-old John Lapinski on Tuesday after alerting Democratic Rep. Jared Moskowitz (FL-23).

He is currently in the custody of the U.S. Marshals at the Joseph V. Conte Detention Center in Pompano Beach.

According to a post on Xthe social media platform formerly known as Twitter Moskowitz, who represents parts of Broward and Palm Beach counties, said Margate police informed him Monday of a possible plot by Lapinski on his life.

Re-elected Rep. Moskowitz said Lapinski was arrested near his home. In his X post, he wrote that the man in question “is a former felon who owned a rifle, a silencer and body armor.”

He continued that Lapinski was found with “a manifesto that included, among other things, anti-Semitic rhetoric and only had my name on the 'target' list.”

Earlier this month, Lapinski was arrested for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

During their investigation, investigators said they found several firearms and said he may have been planning some type of crime, and they turned the investigation over to the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. However, they did not provide any information about whether it was related to Moskowitz.

Moskowitz, who was appointed to the bipartisan task force on the assassination of former President Donald Trump, said he worries not only about the safety of the newly elected commander in chief, but also about the safety of other members of Congress when they are away from the Capitol .

Lapinski could face additional federal charges after his transfer to the U.S. Marshals.
