The man killed in the Vancouver Mall shooting was the son of an unarmed man shot and killed by Portland police in 2004

The 26-year-old man killed in the Vancouver Mall shooting on Halloween was the son of a man shot and killed by police in Portland two decades earlier.

James Perez Jr. was just 6 years old when his father, James Jahar Perez, was killed in his car by a Portland police officer in March 2004. Officer Jason Sery shot Perez three times after his partner grabbed Perez's arm and tried to remove him from the front seat of a four-door car in North Portland. Perez, 28, was unarmed.
