Lake in the Hills police are searching for a man accused of putting “isopropyl alcohol” in a person's sealed soda bottle even though he knew the person was drinking it.

A search warrant was issued Friday for Lazaro Duran, 64, of the 100 block of Del Rio Road in Carpentersville. He is charged with aggravated assault by ingestion of a toxic substance and attempted aggravated assault, each a Class 3 felony, according to the criminal complaint filed in McHenry County Court.

Police said that on Aug. 14 at 12:30 p.m., Duran “knowingly and without justification attempted to cause great bodily harm” by “adding isopropyl alcohol to a sealed beverage bottle,” despite knowing that a man was drinking the beverage. would consume,” and then tried to use it to get the man to drink it, the complaint said.

Isopropyl alcohol, also called rubbing alcohol, is toxic and should never be ingested, according to the National Capital Poison Center.

“It can be toxic if swallowed, inhaled or absorbed through the skin. It is flammable and should always be kept away from open flames,” the website states.

If convicted of a Class 3 felony, the punishment ranges from probation to five years in prison. As of Monday afternoon, Lazaro was not yet in custody of the county jail.
