“I just want to know why.”

RICHMOND, Va. (WWBT) – Richmond Police are now ramping up their investigation into a fatal pedestrian accident.

Tomorrow Brooks, 42, was hit by a car on Midlothian Turnpike two weeks ago.

The RPD originally had its crash team assigned to the case, but now a detective from the Major Crimes Unit is handling it.

A spokesperson for the department says this is because it is better equipped to handle larger death investigations. The move comes as Brooks' family calls for answers and thinks there may be more to their loved one's death.

No charges will be filed against the driver involved and the family is not pressing charges against her, but they question the events that led to Brooks' death.

That's why they're calling on police and the community to share videos, information and any known details about Brooks before her death.

“I just want to know why. It wasn't my baby, she wasn't the drama type. She kept to herself; She didn't bother people. “That whole block of Midlothian Turnpike loved my daughter,” said Brooks' mother, Nieta Blount.

Blount calls for help in the case so her family can find closure. She describes Brooks as a cheerful, fun-loving, happy-go-lucky, thrill-seeker who would help any stranger.

Blount said Brooks was in the area for her birthday and was from New Mexico. She was back in town to party with her friends.

“This street here where my child was born and for her to lose her life on the same street where she was born and raised for 42 years,” Blount said.

Blount and her family have erected a memorial on the 6300 block of Midlothian Turnpike, where Brooks died. To honor her life, they have a teddy bear from her granddaughter, a photo of the time she was happiest, flowers in her favorite colors and more.

“We can’t get those days back. We can only hope for her memories and live her legacy, but I want justice for my baby,” Blount said.

Brooks was struck and killed around 5:30 a.m. on October 9th.

In a previous news release, RPD said Brooks was crossing the street from the north side to the south side when she was struck. Police said at the time: “The driver of the vehicle was traveling west in the center lane when the vehicle struck Brooks. “The driver remained at the scene.”

In a statement, RPD now says: “The RPD Crash Team responded and conducted the initial investigation. As the investigation continued, the circumstances of the fatal collision could not be fully clarified. A major crime detective was appointed as lead investigator as this unit was better suited to carry out a larger death investigation.”

Brooks' mother wonders if there was an argument or something before her daughter's death. She wonders why Brooks was driving when she was hit.

“They say they've put a lot of puzzle pieces together, but that's all I've heard,” Blount said. “So if the public knows anything, if anyone saw anything, if there was an altercation, whatever happened, please put yourself in our shoes. Please come forward and help me with my child.”

Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to contact Detective Sergeant A. Darnell at (804) 646-3927 and Detective Sergeant J. Flores at (804) 646-6670 or Crime Stoppers at (804) 780-1000 to call.
