FC Cincinnati player dies after accident in October

Major League Soccer player Marco Angulo, a defenseman who helped FC Cincinnati win the Supporters' Shield last season, died Monday night from injuries sustained in an October car accident in Ecuador that killed two other people . He was 22.

Angulo was a passenger in a car that crashed into a metal barrier on an Ecuadorian highway on October 7. Ecuadorian newspaper El Universo reported that Angulo suffered serious head injuries and a bruised lung as a result of the incident.

Angulo was on loan from FC Cincinnati and played for Ecuadorian team LDU Quito this year. He also played for the Ecuadorian national team.

“It is with deep pain and sadness that we inform you of the death of our beloved Marco Angulo,” LDU Quito wrote on social media late Monday evening. “We extend our condolences to his family and loved ones. His departure is an irreparable loss that will leave an indelible mark on our hearts.”

The Ecuadorian Football Association said Angulo “defended the colors of our country at every opportunity. Marco was not only an outstanding player, but also a great teammate. He leaves a deep pain in our hearts.”

FC Cincinnati said in a statement Tuesday that it was “deeply saddened by the loss of Marco – a husband and father, a brother and son, a friend and teammate. He was a cheerful, friendly young man who brightened every room he walked into.”

Major League Soccer also released a statement Tuesday offering condolences to Angulo's “wife and son, as well as his entire family, friends, teammates and the soccer community.”
