DaVinci Resolve 19.1 with support for spatial video editing is now available in the Mac App Store

Before Apple introduced spatial video editing support in an update to Final Cut Pro, Blackmagic Design beat Cupertino by a wide margin with DaVinci Resolve 19.1. The update, available for download from the Mac App Store, supports spatial photo decoding and MV HEVC spatial video encoding on Mac.

This means users can now easily edit and deliver spatial video to Apple Vision Pro, a feature not previously available on any mainline NLE.

Spatial video delivery is available in both DaVinci Resolve 19.1 and DaVinci Resolve Studio 19.1. First, I inserted a spatial video and a photo, both from my iPhone 16 Pro Max, into a DaVinci Resolve timeline.

To encode spatial videos, you need to select Quicktime as the delivery format and H.265 as the codec. Once these options are selected, customize them Render stereoscopic 3D Adjust to both eyes and choose MV-HEVC from the drop down menu. Then add the project to the render queue and export it as usual.

By airdropping the resulting video onto the Apple Vision Pro, I was able to play the video immediately with spatial assistance in tow. It should also be noted that DaVinci Resolve supports spatial photo decoding, allowing you to insert spatial photos into your project's timeline and mix them with your video footage.

The process of editing spatial videos is straightforward and works similarly to editing regular 2D videos. In my testing, I ran a simple zoom function using keyframes on both the photo and video and they spatially rendered as expected when viewed on the Apple headset. If you're looking for an easy way to edit spatial content for Apple Vision Pro, DaVinci Resolve 19.1 is for you.

As for Final Cut Pro, support for spatial video editing is widely expected to launch this week, along with new features like AI-powered captions. If we can stick to previous schedules, we may hear details about the update as soon as tomorrow, which is when the annual Final Cut Pro Creative Summit begins. Apple invites participants to its campus to take a first look at the new products in its Pro app range. Of course, we will have full details as they become available.

Until then, what do you think about spatial video editing? Is it something that interests you? Comment your thoughts in the comments.
