Officer involved in fatal bicycle accident has been placed on leave

SHELBURNE, Vt. (WCAX) – Shelburne Police said an officer involved in a fatal crash with a bicyclist has been placed on administrative leave.

Investigators say Shelburne Police Sgt. Kyle Kapitanski, 41, was on duty and driving his patrol car when he struck a bicyclist in South Burlington early Monday morning.

The cyclist, Sean Hayes, 38, of Burlington, died at the scene.

On Tuesday, Shelburne police said Kapitanski was placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of an investigation into the accident by Vermont State Police.

On Monday, troopers said it was raining and dark and the road was wet at the time of the crash.

There is no word yet on whether charges will be filed.
