Leaks show RTX 4070 laptop GPU performance at 65W while gaming

TL;DR: NVIDIA is developing its first consumer APU with gaming performance comparable to the GeForce RTX 4070 laptop GPU and consuming just 65W. The target is the upcoming Strix Halo APU from AMD. Developed with MediaTek, this Arm-based processor is expected to hit the market within a few years in thin and light laptops with up to 80W of power.

NVIDIA's first consumer APU is said to have gaming performance that reaches the level of the GeForce RTX 4070 laptop GPU at just 65W and is aimed directly at AMD's new Strix Halo APU, which launches in 2025.

In a new video from Moore's Law is Dead, his source teased: “Behind the scenes, NVIDIA compares its new APU to an RTX 4070 laptop GPU with around 65W of gaming power“. NVIDIA is working with MediaTek on its new AI PC processor, which will be an Arm-based processor, so these new NVIDIA APU-powered laptops will run Arm on Windows, an issue currently facing Qualcomm and Copilot+ AI PCs consists.

MLID has spoken to a few sources who say NVIDIA is preparing to launch its new Arm-based APU for thin and light laptops within “a few years.” The company is targeting up to 80W of power, with NVIDIA reportedly working with Dell under the Alienware brand for its new AI PC processor.

Source 1: “I (NVIDIA partner) can tell you firsthand that NVIDIA plans to release an Arm-based APU for thin and light laptops within a few years. Preliminary information suggests that it is aiming for up to 80W, and NVIDIA is at least working with Dell for this under the Alienware brand“.

Source 2: “Yes, I (NVIDIA) can confirm that we are working on a consumer APU, and I can also confirm that it is a VERY serious project… not a throwaway experiment or anything. In fact, we're trying to launch this thing by the end of 2025 or 2026 at the latest because we want to launch AMD Sound Wave. You can expect us to market it heavily to both gaming and developers as direct competition to AMD's Halo APUs. Oh, and yes, it will have a powerful NPU, and while there are concerns about Arm on Windows, a big effort is underway to make it work“.

Arm-based AI PC processors are limited to Qualcomm and its new Snapdragon X platform, which absolutely sucks for most users, as does Windows on Arm. But it's getting better… and as more and more hardware players join in – in this case NVIDIA and MediaTek – hopefully we'll see things continue to improve.

MLID's sources mentioned the fact that Arm is currently not great on Windows, but NVIDIA is currently working on it: “Oh, and yes, it will have a powerful NPU, and while there are concerns about Arm on Windows, a big effort is underway to make it work“.

NVIDIA has also previously stated that RTX is the “premium” AI PC platform and that CPUs and SoCs coming to market with new NPUs (Neural Processing Units for AI workloads) are for “basic” AI PCs are thought. The company is right, as a decent discrete GeForce RTX GPU can blow away any NPU in any CPU now and for years to come.

The new silicon will support advanced technologies and will be mass-produced on TSMC's new 3nm process node. It will compete with Apple's new M4 chip and Qualcomm's Snapdragon X processors.
