According to Palisade Police, two people were arrested following a “drug deal gone wrong.”

PALISADE, Colo. (KJCT) – Two people are behind bars for their alleged involvement in a shootout and chase that stretched from Palisade to Delta County on October 8th. According to police, a woman was shot during the incident.

Zachary David Bayhan, a 27-year-old Delta resident, and Jamie Hopper, a 32-year-old from Hotchkiss, are both facing numerous charges stemming from what investigators are calling a “drug deal gone wrong,” according to a news release filed Nov. 4 by the Palisade Police Department.

Police said they believe the duo wanted to get drugs from an unnamed 54-year-old woman but had no intention of paying for them. The two were allegedly introduced by an unnamed 26-year-old man near a warehouse in the 200 block of West 3rd Street in Palisade.

The deal apparently turned violent when the woman tried to drive away. That's when investigators said Bayhan allegedly shot her in the shoulder and stole a car belonging to the unnamed 26-year-old. Police said the shooting victim crashed her car at the Golden Gate gas station on Elberta Avenue in Palisade but is expected to recover from her injuries.

According to the press release, Bayhan led police on a high-speed chase in the stolen car until he was eventually caught and arrested in Delta County.

The following charges are brought against Bayhan:

  • Attempted second degree murder
  • First degree assault
  • Aggravated robbery
  • Criminal attempt at aggravated robbery
  • Possession of a weapon by a previous offender
  • Two counts of felony menacing
  • Theft of motor vehicles

Hopper is charged with:

  • First degree assault
  • Aggravated robbery
  • Criminal attempt at aggravated robbery
  • Two counts of felony menacing

Bayhan is currently held on two separate bonds totaling $115,000. According to Mesa County Sheriff's Office records, Hopper is not currently in the Mesa County Jail.
