University of Utah Police announced they arrested and charged 18-year-old William Gardner with “assault, a Class A misdemeanor.”

Gardner, who is not a University of Utah student, is accused of “throwing a water bottle onto the field at Rice-Eccles Stadium during the Utah-BYU football game on Nov. 9, which struck a member of the BYU cheerleading team “says the police.

A video shot by Cougar fan Jessica Hellewell and obtained by the Deseret News shows BYU cheer coach Jocelyn Allan being hit in the head by a water bottle thrown by a fan at the end of BYU's 22-21 win at Rice-Eccles Stadium in Utah . In a post on Instagram, Allan shared her experience and said that she lost consciousness because she was hit by the water bottle.

“At the end of today's BYU/Utah game, a Utah fan in the south end zone seats threw a water bottle and hit me square in the head,” Allan wrote. “I lost consciousness but luckily one of my cheerleaders brought me to the ground. Police are examining the video footage to identify the seats it came from (we have a pretty good idea). If you saw the incident or have any information about the family that owns this particular box, please contact me. Thank you very much!”

Allan and the BYU cheer team were stationed on the southwest side of Rice-Eccles Stadium throughout the game and immediately following the Cougars' victory in the rivalry game.
