Seniors in the West Atlanta neighborhood are calling on the city to take action to combat crime

ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) – City leaders are addressing concerns raised by seniors in a west Atlanta neighborhood.

Those who live near HE Holmes and Commercial Avenue say they don't feel safe.

Atlanta News First spoke with a longtime resident who asked to remain anonymous.

She said they were dealing with unruly neighbors.

“A lot of crime, a lot of crime, a lot of activity, shootings. It's a lot. So when it gets dark, I just stay inside and don't go out,” she said.

Atlanta City Council member Julian Bond said there have been numerous complaints from the community, largely made up of seniors, over the past six months.

“They have complained that some of the other residents on the street are running gypsy properties, shady tree repair workshops, wild dogs, 24-hour parties, loud music and other activities that they suspect are criminal,” said Bond.

Bond has brought these concerns to the Atlanta Police Department and asked them to do more than just patrols.

Bond said they want officials to be tough on code enforcement to mitigate the problems.

“Most of the people I mentioned are seniors in their 70s and 80s on this street, so they are scared,” he said.

During Tuesday's Public Safety Committee meeting, Atlanta police said they were investigating the issues.

Residents said the problems had gone untreated for far too long.

“Yes, very much so. We won’t make it like this,” said a neighbor.
