Oklahoma is gaining ground in the fight against youth smoking

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. (KAUZ) – High school students in Oklahoma are smoking less than in the past, according to recent data from the Oklahoma Youth Risk Behavior Survey. The survey found that 4.3% of Oklahoma high school students smoke, a decline of several percentage points from 2013.

This number is still higher than the national average of less than 2% of high school students who smoke. Despite progress in curbing teen smoking, vaping still poses a significant challenge.

According to the Oklahoma Tobacco Settlement Endowment Trust, nearly 22% of high school students in Oklahoma smoke. This number is more than twice the national average.

Oklahoma has several resources for those seeking to overcome tobacco or nicotine addiction, including Quit the Hit, My Life My Quit and the Oklahoma Tobacco Helpline.
